Set Up myQ Alerts and Shared Notifications

Create and test the right myQ notification for your device and account. Door-left-open reminders, shared-user permissions and phone delivery are separate checks.

Consumer myQ notifications for an available device. Camera features and notification choices depend on equipment and service.

Create a useful alert—and test where it arrives

Treat app rules, phone permissions and door-state reporting as separate checkpoints.

Before you begin

  • Confirm the device is online and its displayed state is accurate.
  • Choose one useful event to test rather than enabling every alert.
  • Keep the door in sight and clear of people, pets and objects for the test.

Missing is different from delayed

The notification support article says most alerts arrive within 90 seconds, but phone restrictions and network conditions can affect delivery. This is not a guaranteed real-time safety system. Make sure you remain signed in; check the individual device rule as well as overall permissions. Camera alerts may also be snoozed.

Wrong state is different from a blocked notification

If history reflects an unexpected or delayed event, inspect the history before recreating rules. Check account time zone if timestamps are wrong. Hub-based door-state problems can involve the separate sensor battery; a notification setting cannot repair inaccurate input.

What to do

  1. Open app settings using the gear or initials entry shown in your version. Choose Notifications or Notification and Alerts, then the intended device.
  2. Use Add notification or the plus control. Give the rule a useful name, choose the activity, timing and available delivery method, then save.
  3. For an overnight window, create two rules divided at midnight rather than one crossing midnight. For a left-open reminder, choose the reminder delay offered by the app.
  4. Check app/account notification permission and phone-level permission. On iPhone, inspect Settings → Notifications → myQ; on Android, inspect myQ under Apps or Notifications. Menu wording varies.
  5. Trigger one safe observed test. Compare event time with arrival time and the app’s history before calling it a false alert.

What success looks like

A saved rule for the intended device produces the expected alert on your phone or selected delivery channel.

Pause here if…

  • The app reports an incorrect door position: resolve the underlying state issue before relying on alerts.
  • Your screen offers different event types or requires a service you do not have. Do not promise an unavailable feature.

Common questions

Why does another door alert but this one does not?

Rules are device-specific. Review the actual door selected rather than only the global notification switch.

Can I rely on an alert to prove the doorway is safe?

No. Observe the doorway for testing and keep the hardware’s safety protections intact.

Should I reinstall first?

Start with the saved rule, signed-in state, phone permissions and event history. Reinstallation is not the first diagnostic step.

One person gets alerts; another doesn’t

Account & role→Alert rule→Phone permission

Check the affected person’s signed-in account and access role, then their available notification settings and phone permissions. Do not assume that accepting access duplicates someone else’s alert configuration.

The notification option is missing

Keep the app version, phone platform, access role and exact missing option. Reports of co-owner differences do not establish one universal cause or fix. Use the current user-role guidance and app support for the affected account; avoid changing ownership just to test alerts.

Common questions

Does a door-left-open notification close the garage?

A notification is a reminder, not a closing command. A closing schedule, an IFTTT action and a hardware Timer-to-Close feature have separate requirements. Do not assume an alert enables any of them.
